I Owe the Discovery of 1863 to an Encyclopedia (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania),
17" x 10.5” detail, oil on canvas, 2008
see also: 49 x 83”, overall image
This is a draft of the Gettysburg address. It is an original (painting) attached to the larger “Discovery” painting. It is displayed with a black canvas above it and is dwarfed in scale by the black and white image of the Evergreen Cemetery gate in Gettysburg. In 1863, the immense burden of history weighed over Lincoln and on November 19 he delivered this dedication speech, –and felt his words were insufficient that day and would be soon forgotten.
