Shortly after Lincoln took office in 1861, seven states seceded and the Southern Confederacy was born. The Nation was split in half and the “Anaconda” plan was proposed. During this time of cri­sis, Lincoln asked us to hold fast to the literal tenets of the Dec­laration of Independence.
