In 1861, the nation was on the brink of internal collapse. Abraham Lincoln just took office as President, States were discussing secession and threats were made on his life. On February 22, 1861, Washington’s birthday, the President attended a ceremony at Independence Hall. The 34 star flag that now is referred to as the “Lincoln Flag”, was raised as a sign that the nation and its principles that it was founded upon, would be preserved.
